Last week the Azam gang headed a kilometre or so West of our offices to the Cavendish Conference Centre just by London’s Oxford Circus where we were sponsoring and exhibiting at Social Media Marketing. The theme of this year’s conference was harnessing the viral power of social networks to gain the maximum exposure.

I must say I was mightily impressed by the event. The venue was one I hadn’t been to before and was very swish. Everything was organised perfectly down to the smallest detail.

The focial point of the event was the speakers who were presenting from 9:00 to 5:30. The line-up consisted of the great and the good from the global social media marketing scene, ranging from the likes of Chris Brogan to Andy Pipes and Luke Brynley-Jones.

I was also invited to speak at the conference and talked about setting up syndication chains to extend the reach of your social media marketing messages without costing you more time. The Powerpoint presentation is here:






The Powerpoint doesn’t do the talk justice I’m afraid as I don’t like to use them as a crutch as too many speakers do. For instance, I decided on the spur of the moment to make the audience do a Mexican wave to mark the World Cup (which somebody put a picture of here). The audience seemed to enjoy it judging by the tweets at the time and that evening somebody even joked it may have inspired Mexico to beat France which they did 2-0 a couple of hours later in Polokwane.




The organisers will be putting up videos of the conference on Youtube and we’ll let you know on when they’re online.

After months of anxious nail-biting for the shortlisted finalists (Azam included!) the a4u awards are over for another year. Last week’s ceremony at the Grosvenor Hotel in London’s Mayfair was a fabulous event with hundreds of publishers, merchants, agencies and network staff turning out in their bow ties and posh frocks to celebrate the very best in affiliate marketing.

Six members of the Azam team attended this year, and with nominations in five categories we had high hopes of walking away with a clutch of sparkling new trophies to put on the shelves at Azam HQ. There were smiles all round when the judging panel announced that our hard-working Paid Search Marketing team had been Highly Commended in the Best Lead Generation category!

The latest statistics published by ComScore this week reveal that the number of videos viewed online in the UK has increased by 37% year on year, with more than a billion videos being streamed each day by users globally.

Google-owned YouTube.com celebrated its 5th birthday in February and remains the most popular provider of online videos in the UK, with 2.5 billion views in February 2010 alone and 17% growth. Facebook is the fastest growing videos site growing by 205%, while others reporting a year-on-year increase include the BBC (140 million views) and Megavideo.com (53 million views).

In addition to social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, it’s hard to remember what the web was like before video clips came along. In a recent article published on the YouTube blog, Co-Founder and CEO of YouTube Chad Hurley shared his belief that ‘video has the power to give rise to the most diverse set of faces and voices ever seen or heard in human history”.

One of my guilty TV pleasures is a show called Rude Tube which counts down the top viral advertising videos and internet clips from around the world, and although I’ve seen many of the clips before, there are always a few that leave me speechless! As the Rude Tube website states, “you can now watch almost anybody, doing anything, whenever and wherever you want”!

Social media and online videos have also revolutionised the way that news is reported. This was evident this week as thousands of people logged on to watch Gordon Brown’s latest pre-election gaffe – the unfortunate clip which caught Mr Brown off-guard during a pre-election walkabout in Rochdale was up on Youtube and hundreds of other video sites within minutes and had attracted tens of thousands of views by the end of the day. The aggrieved voter, Gillian Duffy, will no doubt become one of the unexpected stars of the election!

An interesting article in NMA last week outlined how a recent change to the Committee of Advertising Practice codes will now allow charities to show comparative ads on TV and radio for the first time. Charities are now able to tell the public exactly how they spend their donations compared to others.

I initially found the idea of charities competing against each other slightly unnerving – like many others, I had always (naively!) thought that charities could rely on goodwill to attract new donors. My experiences of working on the Blue Cross and Compassion in World Farming affiliate programs have taught me differently however – it is a constant challenge to attract the public’s attention and to get them to pledge their money.

The recession is continuing to hit charities hard: a Charity Commission study last year found that 56% of charities have been affected by the economic downturn, up from 52% at the start of 2009.

So while critics worry that these new advertising changes will encourage ‘one-upmanship’ and divisions in the sector, charities say that they have to be more aggressive in distinguishing themselves and the work they do in order to educate the public and survive.

I feel like doing the samba because my colleague Karen has been shortlisted for Affiliate Manager of the Year for the a4u Awards 2010 and would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to everybody who nominated her.

I wrote the following last year on her Linkedin profile and it summarises everything I believe about Karen:

“There are a lot of people in online marketing who jump up and down and brag about their supposed achievements. Karen is the opposite. She has achieved many things in her long, illustrious career in digital marketing and been pivotal to the success of many projects, but not often been recognised for it. Her personality is thus that she prefers to focus on getting jobs done than dance the hula-hoop and have everybody watch her. I feel incredibly privileged and fortunate to have such a talented and affable person as my colleague.”

Karen was called the most reliable person in the entire industry by a prominent figure on one of the affiliate networks and she has been a Godsend to the Azam team with her dependability and the diligence and quality of her work.

She’s a very humble person and will be embarrassed at what I’m writing, so I’ll stop. Suffice to say, Karen has been one of the unsung heroines of affiliate marketing for many years (on the day the shortlist was announced Karen was making a 500 mile round-trip to meet one of her Affiliate Management clients, who she’d travelled 450 miles to meet a few days earlier).
